Page UltraLightBrowser.
The UltraLightBrowser, aka BaaS (Browser as a Service), is a two tiers architecture to provide a full featured browser in devices with limited capabilities like TV sets. A farm/cloud of browser instances connects to light clients in devices using a minimal screen refresh protocol. A possible implementation using open source software would be to connect Mozilla code base to VNC code base to build a VNC reachable browser application. It the requirements are low enough, then it becomes possible to provide a Firefox style browser in almost any device with a screen and some IP connectivity. The UI could be rendered using DixX, on devices that can display that format (or jpeg, or whatever). May 29th 2008SkyFire and Opera Mini are examples of the two tiers technology I am talking about. In these cases the thin client device with limited capabilities are mobile phones. But the same solution would work to deliver a good Web experience on IP connected TV sets. That would cost maybe as little as $10 to $20 for a TV manufacturer, up to maybe $30 to have Wifi and HD. January 18th 2008Mozilla Weave stores user data (preferences, bookmarks, etc) in the cloud. One less thing to implement in the browser farm. |
