June 19th 2007 -- IBM Patent on "Inertial slider" + misc scrolling things

A month ago I started a project about the design of a Wiki that would be really easy to use, maybe even usable by people not very computer literate. It is too soon to tell much about it.

However, while I was implementing some "scrolling" solution, I was reminded the iPhone way of scrolling, using the touch screen and some inertia. While looking for information about "inertia scrolling", I found an IBM patent, Patent 5872566, titled: Graphical user interface method and system that provides an inertial slider within a scroll bar. Patents are a hot subject these days. See for example this thread about some iPhone related Apple's patents on Google Group comp.sys.mac.advocacy.

Well. My UI is not going to be touch screen driven, because pianists (for example) don't turn the page themselves. My UI is an eye gesture controled UI in DHTML & JavaScript, whatever that actually means. And if you blink, it will smile (kidding). So far I can demo the scrolling method. If you look at the bottom of the page, it scrolls up, if you look at the top..., if you insist to scroll too fast to read, it jumps, etc, etc...

Les Wikis c'est bien. Mais c'est encore trop difficile d'utilisation pour une bonne partie de la population.

J'entreprends ici une expérience pour simplier l'utilisation d'un Wiki afin de le rendre utilisable par un plus grand nombre de personnes.

La population visée :

1. Les utilisateurs déjà à l'aise avec l'utilisation du Web sur un PC.
2. Toutes les autres personnes en contact avec la population précédente.
   • Et d'abord celle ayant accès facilement au web de chez elles

Le plus petit dénominateur que je vise est :

1. Un accès au Web
2. Un écran/afficheur d'une taille raisonnable, 40x24, 320 x 240 pixels.
3. Un dispositif de pointage
4. Un dispositif de saisie de texte
5. Un dispositif de copier/coller
6. JavaScript si possible

Par exemple : Une Wii.

L'utilisation du service est ludique. Par exemple, on acquière des "points" d'expérience qui rendent progressivement disponibles des nouvelles fonctions.

   • Quand le "curseur" est en haut ou en bas, ça "scrolle"
